Florida Hurricane Prep: Clean Drinking Water When the Power Goes Out
Share
If you live in Florida, you already know the routine: water jugs, batteries, gas in the car. But bottled water disappears from shelves fast when a storm is on the way, and it runs out faster than you think once you count cooking, coffee, and brushing teeth. A countertop gravity filter is one of the easiest ways to stretch your supply.
How much water do you actually need?
FEMA and the Red Cross recommend at least one gallon per person per day, for a minimum of several days. A family of four needs 12+ gallons for a three-day outage, and many Floridians plan for a week or more after a major storm.
Why a gravity filter makes sense for storm season
- No power needed. Gravity does the work. Fill the top chamber and filtered water collects in the bottom.
- No plumbing. It sits on a counter, a table, or a tailgate.
- Improves stored water. Water sitting in a bathtub or jugs can pick up off tastes and odors. Activated carbon helps with taste, odor, and chlorine.
- Useful year-round. Unlike a pallet of bottles, it earns its counter space every day, not just in September.
An important safety note
Activated carbon filters are designed to reduce chemicals like chlorine, VOCs and PFAS, plus bad taste and odor. They are not a substitute for boiling or disinfection when your utility issues a boil-water notice or when water may be contaminated with bacteria (for example, after flooding). Always follow your local utility and health department guidance. When in doubt, boil first, let it cool, then filter for better taste.
A simple Florida storm water plan
- Before the storm: fill clean containers and your gravity filter's top chamber with tap water while it's still flowing and safe.
- Keep spare filters on hand. Replacement carbon filters are small and easy to store with your hurricane kit.
- After the storm: check your utility's status. If there's a boil-water notice, boil first.
- Rotate: use the filter daily so you know it works and you're familiar with it before you need it.
Which size is right?
Our 6L (1.6 gallon) system fits couples and small households. The 8L (2.1 gallon) system is the better pick for families or anyone who wants more filtered water between refills. If you want fluoride reduction too, the Complete Combo adds Post-Treat fluoride filters.
